According to the data from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting in 2014, 70 percent of hip dysplasia patients who received hip arthroscopyshuttestock 47876986 cropped 300x142 - Hip Arthroscopy Surgery Helps To Treat Dysplasia orthopedic surgery did not need total hip arthroplasty 5 years after the procedure.

This data also indicated improved outcome scores, patient satisfaction, and quality of life.

Southern California Hip Institute (SCHI), led by board certified orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tigran Garabekyan, provides hip arthroscopy surgery to patients in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations.

Labral Tear

A labral tear is a tear in the dense tissue surrounding the hip socket. The labrum provides support to the hip joint. In case a tear occurs, it can lead to a piece of this tissue being pinched and causing pain.

Notably, if the labral tear is a secondary problem while there is an underlying mechanical issue, then merely treating the torn labrum and not addressing the deeper cause behind the tear may only offer short-term relief. It is important to address the problem sustainably.

Sometimes patients with labral tears due to impingement who receive hip arthroscopy do not achieve lasting relief unless the underlying cause of impingement is also treated.

In a hip arthroscopy orthopedic surgery procedure, the surgeon places 2 or 3 tiny incisions. Through these incisions, they will insert small, pencil-thin instruments including an arthroscope, into the joint. The arthroscope has an attached camera lens which magnifies and lights up the interior structure of the joint.

Fiber optics transmits this information to a visual monitor akin to a TV screen. This enables the surgeon to view the joint’s interiors and identify the presence of an injury or abnormality. The surgeon can repair and correct some conditions using these special surgical tools.

Hip arthroscopy is often more complex than shoulder or knee arthroscopy as the hip is situated deep in the muscle layers and other vital structures such as blood vessels and nerves. To enable the surgeon to view the joint properly, the patient is placed on a specialized surgical table.

Then traction is applied to the leg that is being treated to separate the joint slightly. Nerve damage may potentially occur due to this traction, and proper care is taken to prevent this occurrence.

The key benefit of hip arthroscopic surgery is that it is significantly less invasive in solving specific hip issues in comparison to a substantial, open incision.

Advantages

Advantages of hip arthroscopic surgery are:

  • Significantly smaller incisions are placed.
  • It is usually performed on an outpatient basis.
  • It enables faster and accelerated rehabilitation. Depending on the issue being treated, the surgeon may ask the patient not to instruct them to wear a hip brace to restrict hip motion.
  • Many patients return to normal activities sooner than if a traditional, open incision procedure is performed.

Arthroscopy might be a viable alternative to a young person seeking to avoid total hip replacement or a similar procedure. It is vital to understand all the risks involved in hip arthroscopy surgery. Loose bodies occur when fragments of cartilage and/or bone break off and stay within the joint. Such tiny, floating fragments can become caught in the hip during shutterstock 216586288 300x200 - Hip Arthroscopy Surgery Helps to Treat Loose Bodies of Bone or Cartilagemotion.

This can make a person feel as if their hip is stuck or locked. Additionally, this frequently causes sudden pain. Hip arthroscopy orthopedic surgery can remove loose bodies effectively.

Southern California Hip Institute (SCHI), led by board certified orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tigran Garabekyan, provides hip arthroscopy procedures to patients in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations.

Treatment

Injury or other damage to the hip can generate loose bodies of cartilage covered fragments of bone that float around the joint. Such pieces can get stuck and lead to locking symptoms and serious pain.

Synovial chondromatosis refers to a condition in which the lining of the joint is abnormal. It develops small cartilage lumps that can float around leading to pain when they get caught in the joint. Arthroscopy can help remove these and treat the synovitis.

Loose bone or cartilage fragments in the hip joint can lead to painful joint locking and catching. Through a procedure known as arthroscopy, the surgeon can remove any loose fragments from the hip. This procedure uses tiny incisions and specialized instruments.

One such apparatus is an arthroscope, which is a small, tube-like instrument that a surgeon uses to view the inside of a patient’s joints.

In the Operating Room

Immediately prior to the surgery, the patient will be asked which hip needs treatment. This is a standard safety protocol in the operating room. The patient will likely receive general anesthesia to perform the orthopedic surgery procedure safely and painlessly for the patient.

When the patient is under the effect of the anesthesia, their leg is gently pulled to widen their hip joint. Then the surgeon places a few tiny incisions (portals). Using these portals, they will insert surgical instruments, including the arthroscope.

The arthroscope transmits pictures of the joint to a video screen. These pictures enable the surgeon to see within the patient’s joint. Also, the joint is filled with sterile fluid so that the surgeon can see in a precise manner.

Removing Loose Bodies

Once the surgeon finds the loose bodies in the hip, they will try to remove them via a surgical tool, such as a grasper. However, at times the loose bodies are too significant to be removed. In such cases, the surgeon will disintegrate the loose bodies into smaller fragments.

After that, they will remove these fragments through the portals. When the surgeon completes the procedures, they will close and bandage the portals. Then the patient will be taken to the recovery room.

Hip arthroscopy is an effective surgery that has enabled a number of patients to restore the function of their hip and experience a reduction in pain due to their hip. Hip arthroscopy surgery is minimally invasive.

The surgeon places tiny incisions to assess and treat a wide range of painful hip problems. The surgeon will place two to three small incisions near the patient’s hip joint to conduct hip arthroscopy surgery.

Snapping hip refers to a condition in which the patient experiences a snapping sensation or hears a popping sound in the hip while walking, rising from a chair, or swingTestimonial Jack Whitney Picture 300x199 - Hip Arthroscopy Surgery Helps to Treat Snapping Hip Syndromes the leg around. This snapping feeling occurs when a tendon or muscle (the strong tissue that connects muscle to bone) moves over a bony protrusion in the hip.

Though this condition is typically harmless and painless, the sensation may be a cause for annoyance. In certain cases, the hip snapping causes bursitis which is a painful inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion the hip joint. Hip arthroscopy orthopedic surgery can help to treat snapping hip syndrome.

Southern California Hip Institute (SCHI), led by board certified orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tigran Garabekyan, provides hip arthroscopy procedures to patients in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, and other suburbs and cities in this part of the country.

Causes

Snapping hip is most commonly occurs due to the tightness in the tendons and muscles around the hip. Individuals involved in activities and sports that warrant repetitive bending at the hip are more prone to snapping hip, especially dancers.

Young athletes are also vulnerable to develop the snapping hip. The reason for this is that the tautness in the muscle structures of the hip is standard during growth spurts in adolescence.

The most common area of snapping hip is at the outer side. Here the iliotibial band passes over the part of the thigh bone called the greater trochanter. If the trochanter projects outwards slightly, the movement of the band across it leads to the snapping sound.

This hip snapping may eventually cause hip bursitis. Bursitis is the swelling and thickening of the bursa which is a fluid-filled sac that enables the muscle to glide smoothly over the bone

Medical History and Physical Exam

The surgeon will initially establish the exact reason for the snapping by reviewing the patient’s health history and symptoms and then performing a physical exam. They may ask the patient about the location of the pain, the types of activities that lead to snapping, and if they can demonstrate the snapping, or if they have experienced an injury to the hip region.

Imaging Tests

X-rays provide clear images of thick structures, like bone. Though x-ray images of individuals with snapping hip do not usually display anything abnormal, the physician may order x-rays in combination with other tests to rule out any issues with the joint or bones.

Surgical Treatment

In a situation where the snapping hip is unresponsive to conservative treatment, the surgeon may recommend hip arthroscopy orthopedic surgery. The surgical procedure will be customized according to the patient’s unique anatomy, symptoms, and the cause behind the snapping hip.

Hip Arthroscopy

During hip arthroscopy procedure, the surgeon will insert a tiny camera, known as an arthroscope, into the hip joint. The camera showcases images on a television screen. The surgeon will use these pictures to guide very small surgical instruments.

As the arthroscope and surgical tools are thin, the surgeon can only place tiny incisions (cuts) instead of the more substantial incisions required for standard, open surgery. Hip arthroscopy is most often used to eliminate or repair pieces of a torn labrum.

Inflammation in the thin, smooth hip lining may cause debilitating pain. It usually occurs as a sudden onset. The joint’s abnormal rubbing and further inflammation willshutterstock 95945713 300x300 - Hip Arthroscopy Surgery Helps to Treat Synovitis irritate the hip, at times down to the knee. The patient may walk with a limp to avoid the pain or abstain from walking at all.

Adults are more vulnerable to synovitis if they suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, arthritis, or gout. This leads to a painful range of motion in the hip in all directions, and resting typically leads to some relief.

Southern California Hip Institute (SCHI), led by board certified orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tigran Garabekyan, provides hip arthroscopy procedures to patients in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding communities and cities in this part of the state.

Treatment

A mild case of synovitis may prompt a “wait and watch” approach involving rest and medicines. In case the condition does not resolve remarkably in two or three days, the patient may need a synovectomy(removing the inflamed tissue) to reduce the associated pain significantly.

Synovitis of the hip causes the lining of the joint (synovium) to become inflamed, painful and swollen. In arthritis, a significant amount of taut, smooth tissue covering the hip’s “ball” and “socket” (cartilage) is damaged. Arthroscopy orthopedic surgery can treat arthritis and synovitis using only tiny incisions and specialized instruments.

In the Operating Room

Immediately before the surgery, the patient may be asked about which hip needs to receive treatment. This is a standard measure for extra safety. The patient will receive general anesthesia in the operating room to keep them comfortable throughout the procedure.

After the patient receives anesthesia, their leg is delicately pulled to widen the hip joint. Subsequently, the surgeon places a few tiny incisions known as portals. Using these portals, they insert surgical instruments, including the arthroscope.

The arthroscope sends pictures of the joint onto a video screen. These pictures enable the surgeon to view the inside of the joint. The joint is filled with sterile fluid to enable the surgeon to view with more clarity.

Repairing Synovitis and Arthritis

In the treatment of synovitis, a portion of the compromised synovium is taken out. The surgeon may achieve this through shaving tissue through arthroscopic surgical tools. To treat arthritis, the surgeon removes or uses a shaver to smooth torn or loose cartilage. Arthritis may cause bone spurs. The surgeons will remove the bone spurs if any. After the procedure is complete, the surgeon will close and bandage the portals. Then the patient will be taken to the recovery area.

Benefits of Hip Arthroscopic Surgery

The advantages of hip arthroscopy orthopedic surgery are as follows:

  • Tiny incisions are placed.
  • It mostly is performed as an outpatient surgical procedure.
  • It facilitates faster and accelerated rehabilitation. According to the condition being treated, the patient may receive instructions not to bear their entire weight post-surgery for some time or to wear a hip brace to restrict hip motion.
  • For several patients, it enables them to resume their regular activities more rapidly than if a traditional, substantial incision procedure is used.
