What is Orthopedic Surgery?

shutterstock 726970018 300x220 - Orthopedic Surgery | Los AngelesOrthopedic surgery involves the diagnosis and surgical treatment of various conditions that affect the human body’s musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal system includes ligaments, nerves, bones, joints, tendons, muscles, and corresponding anatomical components.

Derived from the Greek term “ortho”, which means “straight”, the term “orthopedic” refers to setting the bones straight. Southern California Hip Institute (SCHI), led by board certified orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tigran Garabekyan, provides advanced treatments to patients in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding communities in this region of the country.

Treatment Areas in Orthopedic Surgery

The musculoskeletal system is a vital part of the human body. It includes:

  • Muscles
  • Joints
  • Bones
  • Cartilage
  • Tendons
  • Joints
  • Connective tissues

An orthopedic surgeon is trained to treat numerous health concerns related to these body parts. Treatments provided by orthopedic surgeons range from surgery for joint replacement to therapy for arthritis.

While an orthopedic surgeon will primarily perform surgical procedures in their areas of specialty, their key goal in every orthopedic surgery is to provide freedom from pain and improve the patient’s mobility and enhance their quality of life.

Orthopedic surgeons are equipped to treat almost every condition associated with the musculoskeletal system, ranging from broken bones to spinal tumors. Some common conditions addressed by orthopedic surgeons include:

  • Hip injuries
  • Knee injuries
  • Shoulder injuries
  • Injuries to the foot
  • Arthritis
  • Trauma to the spine
  • Injuries to the arm
  • Injuries to the elbow
  • Scleroderma
  • Hemophilia
  • Injuries to the hand
  • Bone cancer

Hip Injuries

Comprising of only two bones, the hip is known as a ball and socket joint. The base of the pelvis, known as acetabulum, circles the curved edge of the femur or femoral head, providing ample scope for movement.

The blunt force of a fall can cause the femur to crack or cause hip fractures. The weakened bones of elderly patients or those with osteoporosis or suffering from cancer are vulnerable to hip fractures brought on by an injury. Most hip fractures need surgery as they can deteriorate over time.

But milder fractures can be treated through physical therapy and non-invasive treatment. Surgery to repair hip fractures involves repair of the cartilage and altering of the bones using biocompatible metal, if required.

Knee Injuries

Categorized as a compound joint, the knee is made of three bones – the patella or kneecap, the tibia which passes inside the shin, and the femur also known as thighbone. The knee is also called a modified hinge joint.

All three bones are prone to fractures. Patellar fractures are caused by intense and focused trauma to the region, such as a vehicular accident. Jumping injuries can break the tibia while significant force is necessary to rupture the hefty and tough femur. Patients with feeble bone tissue are vulnerable to femur fractures.

 Shoulder Injuries

The clavicle and the scapula make up the shoulder. The clavicle is also known as the collar bone, while the scapula is the shoulder blade. The clavicle is more likely to be fractured especially due to trauma or a blow.

Physical therapy and rest can help to treat a majority of shoulder fractures. Anti-inflammatory medication, a sling, and rest are prescribed for shoulder sprains and strains that limit movement. Dependable orthopedic surgeon Dr. Garabekyan receives patients from North Hollywood, Los Angeles and other communities and towns in this part of the state.
